Goals will vary according to the ability levels of the children. This camping unit is designed to be used with children in preschool as well as the primary grades. Activities can be easily adapted to a wide range of age and grade levels. The activities are created to be used in inclusive programs, which teaches children with and without disabilities together. All children participate in all activities at the same time with functional IEP goals being infused into naturally occurring events within the daily routine. Any adult gives any child support whenever needed.
Camping Goals: During this theme children will explore different places to camp: wilderness, a lake, campgrounds or backyard. Some authentic questions to ask children:
Who has been camping?
What activities did they do while camping?
What types of gear did they need?
How is it different from staying at grandma or grandpa's house or a hotel/motel?
What games did they play?
What might they see camping that they would not see at home?
Where did they sleep?
What types of food did they eat and how was it cooked?
This month ALL children will learn:
Camping vocabulary.
Safety rules when camping.
How to use their imagination to pretend to go on a camping trip.
How to plan for a camping trip.
How to group problem-solve when collaborating with peers on jobs to share and different responsibilities when going on a camping trip.
How to compare outdoor living with all the comforts of home.
