SENSORY RAINFOREST

The following activities encourage children to use their sense of touch and smell.
    Mud:
  1. Place dirt in the sand table.
  2. Have children add water to make mud.
  3. Let the children have fun making mud and playing in the mud.
  4. Excellent reason to wash hand and discuss clean and dirty.
  5. Discuss at circletime how did the children make the mud, how is mud made outside?
    Java Dough:
    What you will need:
    ¼ cup instant coffee
    ¾ cup warm water
    2 cups flour
    ½ cup salt
    Procedure:
  1. Mix water and instant coffee until instant coffee is dissolved
  2. Combine four and salt in a medium bowl
  3. Add ¾ cup of water and stir until a smooth dough is formed
  4. Let children create some cool rainforest java ants, spiders, snakes, or lizards.
  5. Adult bakes finished product in the oven at 300 degrees for 30-45 minutes or until hard.
  6. Children can paint with poster paint.
  7. Store extra dough in airtight bag or container.

    Sensory Snakes:
  1. Provide children with playdough.
  2. Model to the children how to make a ball, then roll with hands to make snakes.
  3. Dry them for art project, if desired.

Be a Yanamama: Tribal Rainforest People

Face and Body Paint:
What you will need:
2 Tbs. solid shortening
1 Tbs. cornstarch
4-5 drops food coloring
small make-up sponges

    Procedure:
  1. Mix shortening and cornstarch together in small bowl.
  2. Add 4-5 drops of food coloring. Mix well.
  3. Apply Face and Body Paint to arms and face using small sponges.
  4. Remove with soap and water

3-D Puffy Sand
What you will need:
1/3 cup flour
1/3 cup water
1/3 cup salt
2 ½ Tbs. Tempera paint
½ Tbs. sand
Plastic squeeze bottle

    Procedure:
  1. combine dry ingredients in medium bowl
  2. Add water and tempera paint. Mix until well blended.
  3. Carefully pour mixture into plastic squeeze bottle
  4. Let children decorate a small flower pot.
This was taken from the Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions.
This activity is great for children who need extra practice in small muscle strengthening which is connected to prewriting skill.

Kookie Creepers: Rubber like bugs, snakes, etc.
What you will need:
1 envelope unflavored gelatin
2 Tbs. hot water
2 Tbs. white glue
½ Tbs. liquid tempera paint
Assorted candy or cookie bug molds

    Procedure:
  1. Mix liquid tempera paint and white glue together in a small bowl.
  2. In another bowl, mix gelatin and hot water until gelatin is completely dissolved.
  3. Add the two mixtures
  4. Stir until it begins to thicken (6-7 minutes).
  5. When thicken quickly pour in candy mold or cookie cutter.
  6. Place mold in freezer for 5 minutes or until firm.
  7. Carefully remove creepies from mold and let air dry for 1 hour on each side.
  8. Children now have some creepy bugs for sand or block area.
This was taken from the Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions. This is another great sensory experience for some children who tend not to touch a variety of textures.
