RAINFOREST ART ACTIVITIES
All of the following projects should be saved to help the children create their own rainforest towards the end of the project.
Tropical Rain Stick
What you will need:
- Heavy cardboard mailing tubes
- Duck tape
- Nails
- Hammer
- Seeds, pebbles, rice, dried beans
- Adhesive-backed shelf paper
Procedure:
- Hammer nails into the mailing tube 1/8-inch apart using the spiral seam of the cardboard as a guide.
- Have children add several handfuls of assorted filler material.
- Seal each end of the tube securely with duck tape.
- Decorate with adhesive shelf paper or use markers, stickers, and ribbons to make it tropical.
- Use as a musical instrument during music time.

Egg Carton Centipede:
- Have parents save cardboard egg cartons (each child will need half a carton).
- Cut the carton in half and punch holes in section for legs, except for ends.
- Have children put pipe cleaners in each hole, twist on inside and bend on outside.
- Have children decorate their centipede with paint, markers, etc.
- Have children make one end the head with goggle eyes and pipe cleaners for antenna.
Filter Flowers
What you will need:
- 3 coned shaped coffee filters
- 10-12 drops of food coloring
- ΒΌ cup water
- green piper cleaners
Procedure:
- Mix water and food coloring in small dish. Repeat 2-3 times using different colors of food coloring in different bowls.
- Fold each 3 coffee filters into fourths
- Dip each edge and corners of filters into a different bowls.
- Unfold and place on paper towel to dry.
- Place three filters inside each other.
- Grab the bottom of the point of the filters and twist the top 3 inches of the green pipe cleaner around the point. Pull the rest of the piper cleaner down to form stem.

Rainforest Club House:

- Get a large box.
- Cut several door entrances.
- Hang crepe paper streamers in doorways.
- Let children decorate inside and outside with markers drawing large trees, flowers, and use stickers of bugs and rainforest animals.
Stuffed Newspaper Snake:
- Have children rip sheets of newspaper (good precutting skill).
- Have children crumble newspaper.
- Stuff newspaper into leg of old pantyhose leg (include the toe because that will be the head).
- Tie end of stocking closed with pipe cleaner or yarn.
- Draw a face on the toe of the stocking with markers.
Paper Plate Rainforest Animals:
- Have paper plates for children.
- Cut out eyes and mouth.
- Let children decorate as lions (use yellow yarn for main), tigers, monkeys, etc.
Rainforest Placemat:
- Have construction paper out with markers, stickers, and crayons.
- Children create different layers of the rainforest and decorate.
- Teacher laminates.
- Have children use the rainforest placemats during snack time.
Tropical Rainforest Mural:
- Have large butcher block paper out on table secured with tape.
- Teacher pre-draws the three layers of the rainforest (trunks and tops).
- Children come to art during choice time and help color with markers and crayons.
- When background is complete, children glue animals that teacher has cut from magazines or catalogs to create the mural. Children can further decorate by adding flowers, making bugs from paper by cutting out circles then drawing legs once glued on butcher block, and cut and glue some vines.
